I read a great tip recently:
Toss any bottles of half-used sunscreen at the end of every summer so it’s a no-brainer to buy new stuff when the warm weather rolls around again next year. Why? Well, sunscreen can last three years, but exposure to high temperatures dilutes its potency. You know, high temperatures like the ones you encounter at the beach, pool, and pretty much anywhere else you’d need sunscreen in the first place.
Besides, if you haven’t used an entire bottle of sunscreen in one summer, you probably didn’t get out enough, or use enough sunscreen when you did – or both. This way, you don’t have to worry if your sunblock’s past its prime.
Similarly, there’s a few pieces in your closet that may need an imposed expiration date as we roll into September. I don’t know about you, but I’ve often found myself packing away clothes during my semi-annual closet purge that I didn’t wear all season..but for whatever reason (I got it on sale! I’ll wear it when I drop a few pounds! I just have to buy an entirely new outfit to wear this one thing with!), I just can’t bring myself to abandon.
But no more! During my closet cleaning over Labor Day (long weekends are the best time to do ’round the house stuff!), I got rid of a ton of summer clothes and sandals I hadn’t worn once despite the warm weather. From my pile of cold weather clothes waiting to resume their place in my closet, I plucked out a few items that I knew I wasn’t excited to wear before they could start hogging space on my shelves.
Besides, who wants to wear old stuff when every store window boasts cozy-looking sweaters, warm wool pants, and sturdy boots? There are just too many great fall shoes and clothes that I’m jonesing for right now not to indulge in a little back-to-school shopping. School-part optional.
Personally, there’s nothing more satisfying than a newly-organized closet and a few big bags of gently-used clothing on their way to Goodwill. And the best part about preparing your closet for winter? Getting to fill it with great new stuff you actually want to wear.
If you feel the same way, you should definitely enter this week’s Outfit of the Week competition, brought to you by Johnston & Murphy.
The dub monk continues to be a big menswear trend, and I understand why. It’s a great dress shoe that lets you show off a little more personality than a more traditional laced shoe. Wear this dark tan, scotch grain calfskin pair with a suit, or wear them with dark jeans. If you’re feeling rakish, wear them with the top buckle jauntily unbuttoned. It’s very “devil may care.”
Send me your best look for welcoming fall, and I’ll pick my fave to take home these bad boys.
You know the drill: a good head-to-toe shot of your look, as well as the in’s and out’s of what you’re wearing. Brands, the weather that day, what you were thinking when you had it on…the whole shebang. Get your pics in to megan (at) stylegirlfriend(dot) com by Thursday at 9am EST!
