Summer Colors that Look Good on Every Guy: From Hitha On the Go

I’m Indian and I recently bought this shirt -
J.Crew linen shirt in acqua
It’s not as light in real life as in the picture but it’s pretty light! I liked it because I thought it was pretty spring-y and I could wear it outside when I go drinking beers and eating brunch (gotta love New York weekend boozy brunches!) but a woman friend who is also Indian thought it wouldn’t work because its too light for my skin tone. What do you think? Are there particular colors that darker toned guys can wear? I have a lot of blacks, dark blues, olives, greys, browns etc. in my cupboard and wanted to change things up a bit. In general my style is more casual chic than dressed up (think Brooklyn but not hipster).
First of all, the description “Brooklyn but not hipster” helped me to pinpoint your style pretty much exactly – trust, I know it well – so thank you for that, Kayam.
For a little reinforcement, I tossed this question out to my most stylish Indian friend (can I say that?? whatever, it’s true) Hitha, of the killer travel style blog, Hitha On the Go. Here’s what she had to say:
I love it when Megan sends a “guywear” question my way – not only does it give me a break from talking travel and womens’ style, but I also end up shopping for my husband in the process. Awesome for me, and cringe-worthy for him when he sees the credit card statement.
I really loved Kayam’s question – and yes, Kayam, I think that shirt would look great on you! – because it brings up the question of what colors work best with different skin complexions. While I could write a novel on this topic, I’ve narrowed it down to five colors (beyond the typical white/black/gray/blue rotation) that will complement any skin tone AND add a much-needed boost of color to your wardrobes.
J.Crew “Byzantine Blue” polo shirt
I have yet to find a skin tone that isn’t perfectly enhanced by this particular shade of blue. Like navy or gray, it’s a foolproof color that looks good on everyone. If you’re only going to buy one color-rich shirt this summer, make sure it’s this one.
Bonobos “Parakeet Green” polo
Like the blue above, this green looks great on any complexion. The hue just screams summer – it reminds me of mornings at a golf course, evenings at a baseball game, and days in the Park.
Banana Republic signature piqué polo in Orange Heather
I’m sure “clothing” is the last thing you think of when you hear “orange”, but this muted orange is one of my favorite colors on guys. I especially like this one by Banana Republic.
Lacoste Red ‘L1212′ Polo
Why don’t more men wear red? Other than a sliver of the color in a tie or on a sock design, I rarely see men don this rich color. This darker red (not quite fire engine, yet too light to be crimson) is universally flattering and can be worn well through fall.
Original Penguin ‘Daddy O’ Classic fit polo in Grape Royale Purple polo
I personally love “feminine” colors (pink, purple) on guys – hell, I think those colors look better on them than on me. And while Megan and I are not about to have you all don shirts that match cotton candy, I do encourage you to dip a toe in the purple clothing waters with this grape shirt. I promise – it’ll look good (and if you still don’t like it, Nordstrom has an excellent return policy).
What colors do you gents prefer to wear? Let me know – I’m always on the lookout to expand my husband’s wardrobe!
