How to wear white:

• Break it up. You don’t have to dive in with a three-piece white suit and bowler hat. Start slow. Try a pair of white jeans, or a white sport coat.
• Wear it like a neutral. In fact, just pretend it’s gray; it’ll feel less scary.
• Dress up accordingly. White is a color of leisure, but it doesn’t mean you should look too casual. Swap out your sneakers for loafers, your t-shirt for a gingham button-down.
• Go with brown accessories. Not black.
  
• Drink and eat safe. I’ve never had a taste for whiskey, bourbon, or any of the other brown boozes that are so de rigeur with my age group these days, and it serves me well when I’m wearing white. When wearing the shade, stick to light-colored liquids and maybe pass on the ketchup with your french fries. Because, really, why push your luck?

I saw this picture of Nish de Gruiter of Suit Supply the other day and couldn’t help but dig the cool/pulled together vibe of his decidedly un-stuffy suit. It might not be right for the office (at least, not most offices), but I love it as an alternative to the blazer/dark jeans dressed-up-but-not-suited-up look. Not that I don’t love a man in a fitted jacket and dark denim, but it’s always nice to add new sartorial moves to your wardrobe repertoire.

*I couldn’t see the shoes (obviously. If not, a sneaker is definitely acceptable with this outfit too. Go for something classic and clean, like a nice white Jack Purcell canvas number.

What you need:

1. A suit in navy or charcoal
Save black for funerals and formal events.

2. Dress shirt in white or a subtle color.
I’m all for color and texture, but  If you’re not comfortable with it, this is not the time to start experimenting. Whatever gives you the most confidence and the firmest handshake works best.

3. A patterned tie.
Even if you are color-phobic, a tie is a great place to bring in some pizazz (that’s right, i said pizazz. deal with it) to your outfit.

4. A good pair of shoes that are polished.
A nice black cap-toe or brown wingtip works with both navy and gray.

5. A grown-up bag 
To carry resumes, business cards, and notes – NOT made of nylon, mesh or is a backpack

6. A watch
Because if you’re late, you’re out of luck.
