Things I think you should WATCH: The League

Okay, usually I’m here pimping a new pair of shoes, hair smoothing conditioner, or a particularly nubby fall sweater, but I just have to go on a TV-loving tangent here for a minute.

I recently got turned onto The League, a comedy on F/X about a group of thirty-something guy friends who do a fantasy football league together…actually, is that how you say it? Do you “do” a fantasy league? “Play” it?

Whatever, my point is: it’s amazing. And I say that as someone who was only vaguely aware that her home state’s team won the Super Bowl last year. And even then mostly because they had a dreamy-in-a-handsome-lumberjack-kind-of-way quarterback leading them to victory.

So when I watch The League, sure, the actual ‘league’ talk goes mostly over my head – trades, touchdowns, that sort of thing. But here’s the great thing – that doesn’t matter at all. My enjoyment of the show is in no way tied to my understanding of what the heck they’re talking about.

I’m in it for the banter, the behind-the-scenes look at male friendships, the ridiculous clothes the wardrobe team puts Paul Scheer in. Because, at the risk of your shutting the Hulu window you just opened up to watch it on, The League is totally Sex and the City for dudes. Which I mean in the best possible way.

If shopping is to women as sports are to men, then this show is SATC’s biological twin. And just like SATC, you can and should watch it with your significant other, but in this case, with no fear of being caught out for you fellas. Because don’t act like you never got caught up in some Carrie-Aidan-Big drama with your girl on the couch when nothing else is on and TBS is running a marathon.

And it’s not even like this is a compromise show. Guys, how many shows does your girlfriend watch that you can’t stand? Girls, can’t stomach another season of whatever the latest 24 knockoff is just so you can get some quality couch cuddle time? Watch this show together. He’ll get football jokes and you’ll get an insider peek at how guys act when you’re not around. It’s actually quite enlightening (fair warning: and dirty).

If you need more encouragement – and seriously, do you really at this point? – it was created by Curb Your Enthusiasm producer and director Jeff Schaffer – wait for it, wait for it – and his wife. So you know you’ve got some male-female balance in there.

Seriously, go catch up on seasons 1 and 2 before 3 starts. And you’re welcome.
