When the weather’s not that wintery, what do you wear?

This week in NYC, we’ve been having the kind of weather that makes those guys who wear shorts and sandals (with white tube socks, natch) in the dead of winter seem sane. It’s nice out! We’re talking, sunny, snow-free days and balmy nights. Yesterday, I went for a run in a t-shirt! In the middle of December!

While I’ll never condone socks and sandals, the shorts-til-I-die guys’ hearts, and internal thermostats, are in the right place. What can I say – when you’re hot, you’re hot.

Now, annoyed isn’t the right word for how I’m feeling, because, hey, I’ll take warm weather as long as I can get it (sorry, climate change, but sometimes you’re awesome!)…but I will say it’s perplexing from a style standpoint. We just hit the halfway mark of December, and it’s 50 degrees outside. Which is fine! Really. I just don’t know how to dress for it. What do you wear for a coat when you’ve already put away all your lightweight jackets for the season? Do you go out in a puffer jacket over a t-shirt? Forego the outerwear altogether and layer up with a heavy sweater? I imagine this is what guys on the west coast face when it dips below 60. “Do I wear…a parka?”
