Figuring out what to wear on a holiday can feel fraught if, like me, you want to seem cool but also love dressing for a theme. Do you lean in and embrace the colors of the season? Pretend you forgot what day it was altogether?
And when the holiday is a patriotic one like the Fourth of July? Well, things just get more complicated.
To be clear, draping yourself in American flag-patterned clothing is a sartorial…choice, and here at SG HQ, we’re nothing if not pro-choice.
But since sporting the stars and stripes gives off “opposite day” vibes in terms of actual patriotism, we generally recommend you steer clear.
Here’s what SG Madness winner and 44th president of the United States Barack Obama had to say on the topic all the way back in 2008:
“…You know what, I probably haven’t worn a flag pin in a very long time. After a while I noticed people wearing a lapel pin and not acting very patriotic. My attitude is that I’m less concerned about what you’re wearing on your lapel than what’s in your heart. You show your patriotism by how you treat your fellow Americans, especially those who serve. You show your patriotism by being true to our values and ideals. That’s what we have to lead with is our values and our ideals.”
Bottom line? You can absolutely look stylish and patriotic without sporting a “Don’t tread on me” tee to your boss’s pool party.
This year, instead of star-spangled swim trunks or a t-shirt that somehow incorporates Mt Rushmore and machine guns, why not try color blocking your way to a subtly patriotic vibe? Or going for two out of three of our flag’s colors?

Weekend getaway
You know we love a pop of color at SG HQ. A red baseball cap tops off this easy-breezy long-sleeve shirt and shorts look. The Asics keep things feeling sporty, not preppy.

To a party
You would think my favorite part of this outfit is the Breton stripe shirt, but joke’s on you. It’s definitely the pizza.
