Valentine's Day Gift Guide:
You've Said, "I Do"
Gift Ideas For Your Long Term Love
When you’ve been with your significant other for some time – we’re talking, post-ring, post-kids, or at least post-joint checking account, the meaning of Valentine’ Day kind of…shifts.
There’s less pressure to impress with a fancy meal or an extravagant gift. That’s a good thing. You’re both comfortable in the security of knowing the other person’s going to stick around awhile. But it’s not an excuse to let thoughtfulness slide. If anything, it’s a reason to remind her that – day in, day out – she’s the most important thing in your life.
This year, make her heart flutter with a present that’s sweet, surprising and maybe even slightly over-the-top. After all this time, you both deserve it.
Below, five gift ideas for the woman who’s definitely going to be around awhile:
Take the gift of jewelry to the next level and get her something completely custom and incredibly sentimental. We love Lulu Frost’s line of “code” jewelry—each gem signifies a letter, allowing you to spell out a personal, secret message that only you and your beloved will know. Kind of like a decoder ring…except you definitely can’t find it at the bottom of a Cracker Jacks box (sorry).
Just because you’ve locked it down for life doesn’t mean it’s all flannel pajamas and ratty old t-shirts after dark. That said, Valentine’s Day is not an excuse to try and force your significant other into some ridiculously uncomfortable lingerie contraption (the things we’ve seen..ribbons and boning and hooks, oh my). Here at SG HQ we love the cute meets cool meets actually kind of sexy appeal of this J. Crew pajama set. Buttons: so simple, so elegant, so easy to get on (and take off…).
Okay, sure sure it’s a little cliche, but there’s literally never a bad time to treat your lady to a spa day. Whether she prefers a massage, mani/pedi or facial, you can’t go wrong with the gift of a luxe spa treatment. Treat her to a day of pampering that’s tailored just for her. Great spas will vary by city and town, but check out places like Elizabeth Arden’s Red Door Spa, Bliss, and your local upscale hair salons.
The latest indulgent “I’d never buy this for myself…which is what makes it so great” treatment she may want to try? Nail art.
Make her an appointment to a local salon that specializes in this over-the-top service on Saturday morning so she’s all spiffed up for date night. Many places offer really fun and funky (read: not cheesy and obnoxious) designs. She’ll appreciate the initiative and your women’s style savvy.
The Best Table In Town
If there’s one cliche whose time has come to die a slow death – perhaps by Cupid’s arrow? – it’s the Valentine’s Day pre-fixe dinner out on the town. It’s like Restaurant Week: a great idea…in theory. In reality? You fight for a reservation (“Of course, we have availability at 5pm or 9:30pm, sir”) and order off an abbreviated menu, choosing between a meager number of overpriced apps, lukewarm entrees, and over-chilled deserts. Oh, and you definitely get to overpay for the privilege.
Instead of taking your love out this Saturday, then, why not bring the best right to your home? Splurge on a private chef who will come to your home and prepare a gourmet meal for two, allowing you to sit back, relax and enjoy each other’s company all evening. One to try? Kitchen Surfing, with services in major cities including Seattle, New York, Washington D.C., Los Angeles and Boston.
Whether you have kids or you’re just looking for an excuse to escape the real world for a night, a staycation at local boutique hotel (like my fave here in NYC, The Marlton, shown above) is an incredibly romantic move for Valentine’s Day. Score extra-awesome, make-all-her-friends-jealous bonus points by surprising her with a service at the hotel’s in-house spa. Sure, you’ll overpay for the privilege, but the way she’ll look at you after – think, that emoji face with the hearts for eyes – will be worth it.
Trust. Taking a night away together is the ultimate relationship refresher that’s both thoughtful and sexy. We call that a win-win.
