Halloween and I have a notoriously tortured relationship. Don’t get me wrong. I’m not a total grinch (to mix holiday metaphors).

I liked it as a kid. What’s not to like about Halloween as a kid? You get to wear silly costumes! And go out after dark with your friends when you weren’t even old enough to see an R rated movie! And candy?! I mean… 

But like it did to unrequited crushes and patriarchal themes in Disney movies, adulthood ruined Halloween.

No, I don’t want to dress like a naughty essential worker, and guys, if you want to explore your feminine side, that’s great! Just consider starting with one of the other 364 days of the year and not on Halloween when you can’t stop rubbing the coconuts on your hula girl costume. Just..no.

The good news is COVID basically ruined Halloween this year (is that a silver lining?!), eliminating (most?!) crowded costume parties. But if you’re, say, taking your kid around the neighborhood for candy left on socially distanced doorsteps, then okay, you might want to get your Halloween’ing on. 

If so, might I suggest the one good Halloween costume of 2020….

No, not Dr. Fauci, but honestly that’s a good guess.

I’m talking about newly anointed premier league coach Ted Lasso.

Played by Jason Sudeikis on the ridiculously great eponymous Apple TV series, Ted Lasso offers everything you could want in an easy, stylish Halloween costume.

A Ted Lasso Halloween costume reigns supreme for a couple reasons:

1. The character has great personal style already, so you’ll actually look cool on Halloween for a change, and…
2. You probably already have everything you need for the costume (minus the mustache) in your closet at home. 

You even have two ways you could go with it, training day and game day.

Wear a v-neck sweater, Oxford cotton button down, and flat-front chinos for “Game Day” Ted Lasso. A training look is even easier; just throw on Adidas track pants and a performance polo.

Maybe you run to the store for a whistle? And if you’re a soccer fan already, add your team’s zip-up and tape a “AFC Richmond” emblem over the logo. But that’s only if you really want to go the extra mile.

Or kilometer, as the case may be.
