The end of February really jumped up on me…not surprising, I suppose, since it’s the year’s shortest month.

And that’s fine by me.

I’m done done done with winter, though winter doesn’t seem to be done with us quite yet.

‘Til flowers are blooming, I’ll cheer myself – and you, hopefully! – up with my February picks: the clothes, drinks, music, and more that warmed my cold, cold heart this month. I can’t wait to hear what’s putting a smile on your frozen face this month, so be sure to leave your favorite finds in the comments below.

DRINK

hot buttered rum, cold weather drink, hot buttered rum recipe

As much as I’d love to be throwing margarita recipes up in celebration of last Sunday’s “National Margarita Day,” to everything there is a season (turn turn turn) and right now we’re bellying up to the bar for cold weather cocktails.

Here’s my buddy, GQ associate editor Mark Byrne, with his yes-it’s-still-winter drink of choice: the hot buttered rum.

“If you’re anything like me, you’ve been drinking whiskey all winter while you wait for summer to circle back around. Switch it up. A good rum will get you psyched for the eventual return of beach weather; that it’s hot and buttered will help you survive another night.”

Ingredients

  • 2 sugar cubes
  • water
  • 2 ounces rum — dark rum
  • pat of butter

Directions:

In a mug, dissolve the sugar in a little hot water, then add the rum and unsalted butter. Fill the mug with hot water and, if desired, sprinkle a little nutmeg on top.

Grooming

portland general store hand cream, portland general store wood super thick hand cream, super thick hand cream, men's hand cream

Moisture is the word of the month at SG HQ. I lost my best pair of leather gloves in the back of an Uber (literally the first time I’ve ever left anything behind in a cab..I’m still mad at myself) and have been relying on a pair of noble but quickly-fraying knit gloves ever since. Needless to say they’re not doing the trick.

My hands were getting cracked and dry, so I’ve started carrying Portland General Store “Wood” Super Thick Hand Cream with me everywhere. It smells like a forest, so just keep that in mind before you start slathering it on in public…or don’t, and just embrace the Christmas tree vibe you’re giving off. You’ve gotta do you.

Clothes

style girlfriend spring clothes, spring clothes for guys

Can I make an un-pick? Cold weather. I’m done with cold weather.

When I used to work at Abercrombie & Fitch in high school and college, right around now is when we’d be putting out cargo shorts and moose-embroidered tank tops. Sure, sub-zero degree weather raged on outside, but inside, we were thinking spring.

Now, can most of you wear the linen shorts and light cotton suits in the windows of stores and on the homepages of their websites? No, but that doesn’t stop me from wanting them for you right now. I’m holding off as long as I can but don’t be surprised if you start seeing the occasional boat shoe or swim trunks start to creep their way into the content here on SG. (All of the above is J.Crew, by the way, in case your spring shopping trigger finger is itching)

Music

 phish albums

{so. many. jams.}

Honestly, nothing totally rocked my world in music this month.

Drake’s surprise drop was good but not great; the 50 Shades of Grey album finally came out and was predictably amazing but I already told you guys about that last month; I’ve been listening to “FourFive Seconds” every time I need some “‘bout to spaz” motiviation, but that’s only one song.

So what have I been listening to? A lot of throwback tunes, mostly jam bands. Did you guys know I had a Phish phase in high school? I’m just as surprised as you are! The group’s nearly never-ending songs have comprised a surprising-even-to-me portion of my work soundtrack in the past few weeks.

Tell me:
